Ryan Dungey of the Redbull KTM team

Everyone here at South of the Border MX Training Facility in Hamer, SC is excited about the new AMA Supercross 2012 season sponsored by Monster Energy. The year is only a few weeks old and big things are happening already. The Supercross riders have been going all-out to get to the top of the leaderboard early, and the result has been exciting races and spectacular spills.

The Supercross races held on Saturday Jan. 14 at Chase Field in Phoenix, AZ will go down as one of the most important days in AMA Supercross history. It marked the first time that an Austrian KTM motorcycle has won a Supercross event. Ryan Dungey became the first rider in the history of AMA Supercross to win in the premier class of the sport his new KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition motorcycle. He got his win by hitting the hole shot and leading all 20 laps of the race in convincing fashion.

After the win, Dungey said “Tonight was a big step for not only me but the whole team. A lot of hard work has gone in to make this moment happen. There’s still a lot of racing left. But I’m glad we could make a big step in the right direction. I’m happy we could pull this off.”

KTM (Kraftfahrzeug Trunkenpolz Mattighofen) is an Austrian Motorcycle company that has been around since 1953. Finally, 59 long years later they have made it to the top of the outdoor dirt-bike racing Supercross series. They have had great success in the European FIM Motocross World Championships, winning for the first time in 1974. They have won both the MX1 and MX2 World Championships in 2010 and 2011, which has brought a lot of attention to the brand here in America. That type of domination has been a sign that the bikes are quality machines, and riders have been turning to the KTM brand in greater numbers.

Having a top name rider on a KTM bike has been the goal of new team manager Roger Decoster, and he found what he was looking for in Ryan Dungey. Since his signing for the Red Bull-KTM team, Ryan Dungey has raced 3 times. He finished 2nd at the Monster Energy Cup, and has a 1st and 3rd place finish in the Monster Energy Supercross series. The KTM brand and team are now ready to be a force on the American dirt bike racing circuit.

The wonderfully mild winter weather we have been having this year means more chance for us to hit the Supercross track here at South of the Border MX Training Facility. You can keep up with the track availability on our website and our Facebook page.
